As a long-time fan of Georgette Heyer, I remembered this title as disappointing. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it deserved a better standing among her Regency romances than my memory had credited to it. Sir Gareth's attempts to keep the beautiful young runaway Amanda from harm fill most of the pages. However, the minor role played in the story by Amanda's true love and the late entrance of the introverted Lady Hester (Gareth's love interest) will keep some readers from fully enjoying this title in the Heyer canon. Amanda's escapades are funny, and all ends well for the two couples. Heyer fans will enjoy it, but those who haven't yet tried her novels would do better to start with "The Nonesuch", "The Reluctant Widow", "The Grand Sophy", or "The Talisman Ring" for their first read by this founder of Regency period romance.
