It's the closest retelling of Anna Sewell's original work that I've seen, and this is a novel that has been dragged out of the barn a few to many times. This version is, as the book is, told from the point of view of the horse. Though it was handled well in the book, I found the narration by Alan Cumming almost annoying as he voiced the horse. At least with the book the voice in your head is anything you imagine, not something forced on you. If you love the story of Black Beauty, you'll love this movie. It's a solid retelling of the original tale, with believable acting, great scenery, and it stands well as a period piece with great sets.
