I could probably write a book about why this is the best movie ever made, but I have to keep it short. Simply stated, it is a perfectly written movie about the unlikeliest of male friendships, with outstanding performances from the entire cast, not least the supporting players. Besides great turns by the leads Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, Bob Gunton is perfect as the unctuous Warden Norton, while Clancy Brown is equally ideal as the brutal Captain Hadley. In its release year, 1994, Shawshank Redemption was overshadowed by Pulp Fiction and dominated at the box office and at the Academy Awards by Forrest Gump. Both those films appear on the American Film Institute's top 100 films list, while Shawshank does not. Yet, Shawshank is by far the people's champion, with a firm and deserved hold on top spot in Imdb.com, well ahead of The Godfather. My recommendation: watch it over and over and over again. You will never tire of it.
