I haven't read the book (yet) but a recent viewing of the film made me put it on my ‘To Do’ list. The plot seemed plausible with one teensy exception - not only is one of the survivors a Surgeon (what luck for the more injured 2nd survivor) but obviously a former Boy Scout Extraordinaire, as there were plenty of scenes played around fireside settings and no obvious signs indicating the frustrations involved in building, igniting and maintaining thereof? Harking back to my own personal dismal fire-building exercises I could only assume that Kate Winslet was one very fortunate recipient both in warmth and medical aid. That aside, both actors were totally believable and the location/scenery was both majestic and menacing. I found I was sitting on the edge of my seat on several occasions. Just finished listening to the book which was also extremely good - actually fleshed out the characters to a much greater degree and can truthfully say that I enjoyed both versions of the story.
