Very gritty movie about a pair of brothers who are bank robbers. About half the movie can be skipped.

It was easier for me to watch this than it was to watch the dvd extras. I was feeling sorry for Gil Birmingham in the audience presentation closing those out. The movie has managed one negative review amid the laudatory ones on the RT site; I find that one persuasive. In that final extra the last question allowed those assembled was 'what would you want the audience to take away'. Everyone looked at each other for a while until Ben Foster comes up with something like, 'Hell, it's just a good ride', evoking audience applause. To an earlier question of what it might be compared to someone came up with 'Hud' (the man with the barbed wire soul). Some might say it is the best film they've seen in six months. I wonder if those have taken in well received foreign films. You can expect a morally grey ride through a world where bankers have lost the benefit of the doubt.

What a surprise. I loved this movie. One minute you are rooting for the brothers, the next, the Texas Rangers. The banter between the four main stars are well written. Great acting and a good script made me watched the extra features ( which I normally would not watch).

A very good flick with great acting. Keeps you guessing right to the end.

Loved it! Intelligent script, compelling acting, well fleshed-out characters. There are actors in much smaller roles than the stars who almost steal the show. Did not want this one to end and immediately watched parts of it for a second time. I re-savored the flavor. Best thing I have seen in a long time. Highly recommended. Did I miss anything?

I changed my comments after reading those of other viewers. I feel the need to address the big differences in my opinion and those of some of you. There isn't anything enjoyable about watching "Hell of high water". Nobody wins here. How can a normal human being enjoy watching people being robbed at gun point, ordinary citizens like your mother or sister being terrorized in their place of business, or see people being beaten up on the street? Worse of all is seeing two people dead by gunfire. You are a sick person if you like violence for entertainment. The legacy of the children is one of crime, dishonesty. Apparently, some of you viewers liked this film for all the reasons I disliked it. Forget whether bank robberies can be pulled off like they do here. This a gritty movie with just a few people to keep track off; I like simple plots with just a few names to remember. There weren't any women to mess up the plots with having to please their angst in life. I wonder how this film would have played out if it was an all-female cast.

Easily the best movie I've seen in the last six months. Another Taylor Sheridan gem (the other being SICARIO). I cackled with delight throughout. The fight scene at the filling station, the dialogue between Jeff Bridges and his deputy watching TV at the motel before turning in -- if only more films could deliver such brio. Ben Foster should have received an Academy Award nomination for his performance as the older of the brother bank robbers. (He did win an Independent Spirit Award.) This film has it all: writing, acting, music (the score is provided by Warren Ellis & Nick Cave) and it's visually compelling too. It's like a an excellent Cormac McCarthy yarn without the nihilism. Check it out. You won't be disappointed.

I like these actors but a great film this is not. It's average at best. Not sure why it was up for Best Picture but I felt the same way about half of those that were. My biggest peeve with this film was the sound quality. The dialogue was muddy and everything else was REALLY LOUD. I was constantly turning the volume up and down.

Hell or High Water is not the type of movie I tend to enjoy most (typically comedies and nonviolent dramas), but other than that, I could find few faults with it. It is done very well and is worth seeing, especially if you tend to like this type of movie more than I do. Hell or High Water is rated R for some strong violence, language throughout and brief sexuality.

“You want to live here? Got an old hardware store that charges twice what Home Depot does. One restaurant with a rattlesnake for a waitress. I mean, how is anybody supposed to make a living here?”
“People have made a living here for 150 years.”
“Well, people lived in caves for 150,000 years. But they don't do it no more.”

“I doubt they serve pemmican.”
“You know I'm part Mexican, too.”
“Yeah, well, I'm gonna get to that when I'm through with the Indian insults, but it's gonna be a while.”

What are you doing?
-Sleeping on the porch, practicing my future.
It's a dangerous thing we do for a living. You're lucky, having seen it through to the end. I hope I'm that lucky.
You fellas robbin' the bank?
-What's it look like, old man?
But you ain't Mexicans.
This is what they call white man's intuition.
-Sometimes a blind pig finds a truffle.
We ain't stealing from you. We're stealing from the bank.

Do you know what Comanche means? It means enemies forever.
-Enemies with who?
Everyone. You know what that makes me? An enemy.
-No. It makes me a Comanche.
Boys. Y'all been here for a while?
-Well, long enough to watch a bank getting robbed that's been robbing me for 30 years.
Why are you always dressed like me?
-This is our uniform.
We ain't got no uniform. You can wear whatever color shirt you choose. You just keep choosing mine.
-Ranger regs say white, blue, or tan dress shirts. Stands to reason every once in a while we're gonna be dressed the same.
You know, they loaned the least they could. Just enough to keep your mama poor on a guaranteed return. Thought they could swipe her land for $25,000. That's just so arrogant, it makes my teeth hurt.
To see you boys pay those bastards back with their own money? Well, if that ain't Texan, I don't know what is.

Girl: Do you have a reservation?
-We do not. ... Good lord, look at you. We would be obliged if you would provide accommodations, though we failed to call ahead.
Girl: Boy, you are trouble.
-Oh, the worst kind, darling. In your last days in the nursing home, you'll think of me and giggle.
Ain't you Christian?
-Yeah. But I ain't stupid. God doesn't talk through this man any more than he talks through my dog.
Well, then maybe you should give your dog a listen.
-Ain't you Indian? You're supposed to be burning Sage and dancing around the bed whooping like a bee stung you.
I'm catholic.
-Come on. Come on! I'd rather dance around a fire with a spear. I'd rather have you stab me with a spear than watch this. This son of a bitch, he wouldn't know god if He crawled up his pant leg and bit him on the pecker.
That soccer, never could understand that. Anything a five-year-old can do ain't a sport.

I've been poor my whole life. So were my parents, their parents before them. It's like a disease passing from generation to generation, becomes a sickness, that's what it is. Infects every person you know,
but not my boys. Not anymore.
I'm ready to be done with this.
-You'll never be done with it no matter what. It's gonna haunt you, son, for the rest of your days. But you won't be alone. It's gonna haunt me, too.
-If you stop by, maybe I'll give you peace.
Maybe. Maybe I'll give it to you.
A long time ago, your ancestors was the Indians, till someone came along and killed them, broke 'em down, made you into one of them. ... 150 years ago, all of this was my ancestors' land. Everything you could see. Everything you saw yesterday. Till the grandparents of these folks took it. And now, it's been
taken from them. Except it ain't no army doing it. It's those sons of bitches right there.
