This stylized, hip New York fairy tale begins with a crisis in young Mary's partying life: she has been jailed for holding a rent party in her loft. The 24-year-old Manhattan diva is a party giver and goer who would rather dish with her Latin roommate, her gay designer pal, and her falafel-vendor lover than consider a real job. When an illegal rent party gets Mary busted, she persuades her librarian godmother to hire her. Mary's choice is downtown or the Dewey Decimal system. What's a gal who just wants to have fun to do?

Everyone who loves the library should see this film - it's the storied love affair between a reluctant librarienne and the Dewey Decimal system : they meet cute, spend an ecstatic night together, misunderstandings ensue, a break up, then all is resolved unexpectedly and "happily ever after". You'll see! Parker Posey's character is even based on a real live NYC girl (I was told).
