South of Sunshine is about a senior in high school named Kaycee. Sunshine is a town that is very set in the old ways and is very homophobic and racist. Although she has dated many of the guys in her school, Kaycee has a secret and tries her best to hide it until a new girl named Bren shows up and the feelings she has tried so hard to hide resurface. At first she avoids the new girl but then they start hanging out and date in secret. Kaycee isn’t open and is forced to hide this from her parents and her friends, which Bren luckily accepts. After they begin to build a float for the parade, Kaycee helps and for some reason, her best friend seems strange and keeps getting Bren to do a different task than her. At the hayride the story changes as Kaycee’s best friend finds out and everything goes downhill. Without Bren by her side Kaycee is forced to try to live with the taunts from her school. But when she has the idea to make the float a pride float, it turns out that many people support her and offer to help. I would give this book a 4/5 because it has a great story and characters that are easy to love.

I really wanted to like this book more than I did unfortunately there were too many predictable tropes and stereotypes for me to overlook. Also the characters weren't sufficiently developed for my taste. There were a few emotional moments in the storyline that made me tear up because I could relate to them but they were spread too far apart and left me wanting a deeper connection with the characters.
