Darius reluctantly enters a deal to attempt to father a child with a dying man’s wife. After the tragic loss of two sons, William needs an heir to secure the succession and provide for Vivian, his young wife. Such an arrangement isn’t far from Darius’ most profitable activities, where he sells certain services to a duo of lusty but unfulfilled women. Having endured beatings as a child allows him to shut down emotions when a client expects similar behaviour. But Vivian is different. She wants a baby, but not this way. Both are surprised by their growing feelings for each other during a steamy month at Darius’ country estate, where she dotes on his young ward. Those feelings are extremely inconvenient when Vivian must return to her husband. Vivian’s greedy stepfather provides drama as he learns of the affair. Will Darius untangle himself from his clawing clients? Will the baby be safe? Read on.

I love Grace Burrowes. So far I have enjoyed all her books. But this one stands out because of the unique circumstances of their relationship. Will definitely read more of this series.

“In the two weeks and three days since he’d seen Vivian in the park, Darius had become a master at the game he privately called ‘What I Should Have Said.’ This game consisted of endless mental rehashings of his short encounter with Vivian and endless variations on the winning answer: he should have said not one damned thing; he should have cut her utterly. / He’d failed that round and admitted in hindsight that such a purely coldhearted approach was beyond him, so he’d graduated to Round Two anyway, which he thought of as ‘What I’ll Say Next Time.’ / Knowing full well there couldn’t be a next time.” (p. 184)

“‘Why are you so casual about disrobing?’ / ‘I don’t think of it as disrobing.’ His stockings followed. ‘I think of it as getting into my livery. The fit is superb.’ (p. 121)
