This is a beautiful, beautiful movie, a sort of rags-to-riches tale as young, single mother Juana rises above her circumstances and teaches herself about sushi. There are heartfelt moments throughout, and the food scenes - both Mexican food and Japanese food - are the stars of the show. If you want a "foodie" movie that will leave you with a smile on your face, then I highly recommend this one.

(If you don't want to wait until our library reopens to put a hold on a physical copy of this movie, then you can find it on Kanopy and stream it for free!)

A heart-warming story of a woman striving to make a positive change in her life and the life of her family. A cross-cultural gem that is inspirational and rewarding. Winner of multiple awards.

"East Side Sushi" is a beautiful little gem of a movie. Beautiful in the sense of the power of its truth and reality. Slow start. Hang in there. If you enjoy sushi you will appreciate the adventure even more. Loved the courage of the characters and found the story believable.

Latina single mother from L.A. applies for a job at a local Japanese restaurant and finds a love for making and creating sushi. But women aren't sushi chefs and latinx people aren't sushi chefs. So Juana must fight against stereotypes and expectations to do what she loves.

Interesting story how sushi is prepared. Wonder if it is true life story?

Good story that illustrates the roadblocks on a Hispanic woman's journey to succeed in an environment that is predominantly male and Japanese. I enjoyed her arguments and determination. Some of her fusion sushi sounded interesting, too!

Good movie. Love the food, love the movie. By looking at the cover I thought to main character would be Indian. It would be even more interesting had it be an Indian cook making sushi.
