Laney is an attractive, intelligent suburban wife and devoted mother of two adorable children. She has the perfect husband who plays basketball with the kids in the driveway, a pristine house, and a shiny SUV for carting the children to their next activity. However, just beneath the facade lie depression and disillusionment that send her careening into a secret world of reckless compulsion. Only very real danger will force her to face the painful root of her destructiveness.

Poor Josh Charles. He always seems to be cast as the husband to the messed up wife. Anyway, I didn't enjoy this film because it's been done to death. Still, there are people out there who don't know it exists. It was predictable and just too sad.

A must see for anyone interested in the insidiousness of mental illness. Why can't the mother just "get over it" for the sake of her children, we judgmentally and ignorantly fume. Mental illness affects us all, whether we accept the fact or not. It's just a matter of degree, and whether we are fortunate enough to receive the healthy balance of nature (physiology, genetics) and nurture in our lives that help keep destructive forces at bay. God help us all.

This was a very moving, well-acted film by a fabulous Sarah Silverman. Laney faced the root of her destructiveness, but was unable to deal with it. This shows how messy and unsatisfying life can be, even when you are trying to function with old demons.

I didn't see evidence at the end of this movie that Laney had "faced the painful root of her destructiveness." The close was less than satisfying, but I enjoyed Silverman's performance a lot, and the movie held my interest.

This dreary movie felt like it was 4 hours long. Sarah Silverman did an excellent job in the dramatic role.

Sarah Silverman is drunk and high...at least in this movie. Sometimes comedians do some serious acting and Silverman does just that in I SMILE BACK.

This movie seems very true to real life stuff. I have a whole new respect for Sarah Silverman as an actress.

Sarah Silverman did an amazing job. She was totally believable. Why do comics make the best dramatic actors? Great movie.

A story we've all seen a hundred times before. But the most annoying about it is the lack of resolution.

While this was a well-written and well-acted film, I couldn't help thinking all the way through that this story of addiction and self-destruction has already been told many times in other movies. I don't want to discount the reality and seriousness of addiction in our society, but I just felt that I had already seen all of this before, and the only thing new in this film were the actors and settings.
