What a great read this was! A mother who signed her two daughters to the State after realizing she could not give them the best life. Fast forward to the girls now adults themselves and how they reconnect. This is realistic with the emotional state these woman go through.

Although there is some merit here, the book wanders from the strong theme about maternal instinct vs maternal expectations, and becomes hackneyed and sentimental. The cliches of poverty and the suburban biases about the working classes ruin the thread of reunion between a family that has been torn apart by circumstance and authoritarian pressures. Even the prison experience in the novel is unrealistic and not well presented as a narrative. The author tends , like Ms. Picoult to wander back and forth between narrators trying to give everyone's perspective to the point where the reader is not sure who to identify with, and usually no longer cares.
