Boring rich people being boring. Every scene was predictable, as far as I watched it, which wasn't past the 1st disc, somewhere.

Yuck. It was painful to watch Charles Dance and Eileen Atkins sink this low. I couldn't get past disc 1. The stalwarts of British TV must be hard up for work these days.

Returned without watching. That was the first time.

I borrowed this DVD again and watched the first disk. I thought it was fairly good, but into the 2nd disk, it is too stupid to watch. Returned, not worth my time.

I agree with Van604 - it was more like a rehearsal where nobody was expected to put their heart into it. Disappointing! It could have been brilliant - some wonderful actors in it who had me puzzling as to why they were okay with it being released as it stands. Maybe if you've read the book, you'll look more favourably on it as you'll have the characters more fleshed-out in your mind. I did stick with it to the end, just in case it picked up. Sadly, in my opinion anyway, it didn't.

I expected to like this mini-series, because I had liked Rosamonde Pilcher's Shell Seekers film adaptation years ago with Angela Lansbury. Plus it had Eileen Atkins and Charles Dance. I really do hope that the horrible dialogue is the fault of the writer who adapted the novel. This is one of the worst films I have ever watched. I admit to watching all four disks and ask myself why. I did not understand what was wrong with Virginia. Her lines just sounded strange, so I was glad to learn that her part was dubbed. That explains it. Hard to tell whether most of the actors are really that bad, or whether the writing stinks.

A sort of mini-series of four made-for-TV films. Plotting so foreshadowed that I was calling out events minutes before they happened. Lots of adultery (though no actual sex). Weak acting and really, really bad dialogue (not helped by the dubbing in some cases).

One of the weirdest films I've seen in a while. Austrian and German actors are affecting aristocratic English accents.
The German actress who plays "Virginia" is supposed to have an American accent. Apparently, she could not master an American accent, and so her lines are dubbed! Hilariously bad film!!

Not even Charles Dance could save this drama with a crappy storyline. Worst yet, there is no chemistry among the actors and other than reciting lines, everyone seems to be just going thru the motion rather than giving a performance with substance.
