Sarah Brandt is shattered when she learns that a woman has inquired at Hope's Daughters Mission for Catherine, the abandoned child she has taken as her daughter. The woman claims she was Catherine's nursemaid, now acting on behalf of the girl's mother to reunite them.

Unwilling to simply hand Catherine over to a complete stranger, Sarah asks Malloy to investigate. But when he goes to interview the woman at her tenement in Chelsea, he finds she has been murdered.

Though her death leaves Sarah's claim to Catherine unchallenged, her sense of justice compels her to work with Malloy to find the killer. Their search takes them from the marble mansions of the Upper West Side to the dilapidated dwellings of lower Manhattan and into the deepest and darkest secrets of Catherine's past.

And while Malloy helps Sarah determine the fate of the child she loves, he faces a challenge of his own--and his decision could change both their lives forever...

A satisfying addition to the series especially for those who have followed Sarah and Frank's relationship from the beginning.

This is the first of the series I've read, which tempers my reaction. While I liked both Sarah and Malloy, their characters didn't seem very real. Perhaps they would if I'd read all the prior books. I always prefer to read series in order, but just picked this one up when the bookmobile brought it. The plot seemed highly contrived, very hard to follow, consisting mostly of visits to various people. In retrospect, there was lots of action, but in the reading it was confusing. The ending was sappy and it seemed ridiculous that Sarah didn't see it coming. One reason I picked it up was her career as a midwife, but that didn't have anything at all to do with the plot. Thompson's a good writer, so I may try the first in the series and see if I like that.

Great series, recommend you start at the beginning because the books are more interesting if you understand the characters change and grow. Looking forward to the newest book coming out in May 2014!
