With Dickensian brilliance, Kate Atkinson creates plots peopled with unlikely heroes and villains.

It's a day like any other for security chief Tracy Waterhouse, until she makes a purchase she hadn't bargained for. One moment of madness is all it takes for Tracy's humdrum world to be turned upside down, the tedium of everyday life replaced by fear and danger at every turn.

Witness to Tracy's Faustian exchange in the Merrion Centre in Leeds are Tilly, an elderly actress teetering on the brink of her own disaster, and Jackson Brodie, who has returned to his home county in search of someone else's roots. All three characters learn that the past is never history and that no good deed goes unpunished.

I must have read this in the past and forgotten it completely (between 2011 and 2018) but every page about Tracy sounds familiar. Nothing else is even slightly familiar. Characters are not engaging, time shifts and perspective changes are annoying, and the narrator seems to change, too for Jackson and a few of the spots that are "unconnected" until late in the 372 pages--that honestly felt like more than 600 pages.

If you are bored, and have nothing better to read, give it a try.

Should've realized what "irreverent means". Realized after about 20 minutes I don't like "irreverent" and did not read it.

Funny, irreverent, and seemingly unrelated events and people are expertly woven together in this tale of good intentions gone wrong. Atkinson at her best.

Loved it. Brilliant author. I've read all the Jackson Brodie books. The title is taken from an Emily Dickinson poem, I just found out.

Interesting book, but confusing. In the final analysis, I am not quite sure what happened to whom and why. I am, however, tempted to try another by this author because both the subject matter and the writing style were excellent. A gritty British murder mystery with corrupt cops and abused children.

My favourite by this author. Loved the characters, the action and the happy ending. And of course the dog. I hope the author brings them all back in another thrilling story.

I love how the Jackson Brodie books always weave this web that keeps you wondering how it will all fit together.

One child bought & sold, two others adopted or kidnapped? Once again, Jackson Brodie solves the mystery. I love how the story unfolds in bits & pieces; the reader is engaged in putting together the clues.
