This is Alt-J's first, and best, album. It's one of those records that doesn't feel like it has any filler songs- they're all unique and great. It also sounds the most true to the art-pop/alt-pop sound that they typically go for.
This debut album has received many positive reviews. As alternative indie rock, the styles range from Gregorian chant to folk to art rock. The varied instrumentation is lush and creative. It squeaked in as #48 in one of my 'top' music lists on the OPL site ("Popular" Music 2010-2017 (#2)).
However, I borrowed the CD and found that the vocals are gimmicky, and the lyrics are difficult to understand and ultimately somewhat pointless when seen in print. The AllMusic site gave it a good review, but with an intro stating that the artists: "might be a little bit too clever for their own good. ... An Awesome Wave, is occasionally guilty of pretentiousness, particularly the irritating a cappella vocal warmup of the interlude". Personally I found there were too many "irritating" moments sprinkled in with the genius. 7.5/10
An inventive indie album with intriguing vocals, creative instrumentation, and TONS of replay potential.
One of the top albums in the last few years.
∆, pronounced Alt-J, is a band that is hard to define. They're British, indie, and their problem-solving approach to music is a delight to listen to. Formed in the dorms of Leeds, the band's unique sound is a result of the curfews and noise limits imposed by the school. Listen to this album, and their new one, This Is All Yours. You won't regret it!
I could listen to this album over and over. Wonderful sound to groove to - makes you want to dance. Great to hoop to.
Having never heard of this group prior to being recommended by an ex librarian to have a listen - I find I am really enjoying the quirkyness, the originality and the varied beats and tunes on this cd. Refreshingly different to the mass of music available. Worth checking out.
