I felt like I was beaten over the head with a sledge hammer while reading this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way. The first part of the book is very basic practical stuff. It gets heavier toward the middle. A Buddhist friend criticized this book as being "Buddhism-light". Take that for whatever it means. The book is generally about mindfulness meditation, and I feel a very good, if general introduction to the practice. A couple chapters at the very end on parenting were a really cool and thoughtful surprise. Totally stellar stuff. And not too cosmic either. I bought a copy for the shelf and will definitely read it again.

Jon Kabat-Zinn writes about mindfulness and meditation practice in a way that is very accessible for the novice and beneficial for the experienced practitioner. His brief chapters are structured to encourage readers to slow down and contemplate his words. Kabat-Zinn’s 1994 book guides readers in timeless practices that are even more relevant in today’s fast-paced world.

A very thorough walk through of what meditation is and what it is not, different types of meditation, and specific examples of things you can try out! It is not overwhelming. It is very encouraging and gentle. I felt a great sense of calm while reading the book.

I tried to place a hold on this book and it says "No items requestable, request denied." Why is this book listed if it is not available?

Mindfulness for the rest of us...helped me no longer be annoyed with traffic and generally more calm. A classic for a reason.
