Not my favorite Nesbo. None of the characters are likable and you feel like they got what they deserved in their corrupted lives. On the other hand, the only Nesbo book where I could follow the story and the characters. At the end, he gives 3 or 4 explanations for different characters describing what happened.
Roger Brown is a highly successful corporate headhunter in Oslo, but not successful enough to sustain his wife's lavish lifestyle. So, he uses the information he gleans from his clients to steal their valuable art, replacing them with fakes. When he learns of a priceless Rubens recently discovered by a client, he expects a big payoff, but things don't go as planned. "Nothing is as it seems" in this "deliciously plotted" novel, says Booklist; heist readers will enjoy the multiple twists and turns.
Nov13 2014, My brother-in-law and I always recommend books to each other. He is a real Jo Nesbo fan, and gave me this one, and also a Harry Hole episode, and he was very keen that I give them a go. Seeing as I am at the end of the Dark Tower Series, (Stephen King) and also 2 books into the Outlander series, and also had Shantaram (a good 900 pager) on my waiting list, I wasn't too keen to indulge him. However, this looked like a quick and easy read, and as I am listening to Shantaram the audio book as I read along, which sort of ties me to the computer, (again, just too lazy to dig out the mp3 player, charge it up, load it up, and re-learn how to use it without pushing a thousand buttons to get to the right part,) I decided to give this a go when I went to bed. I was not impressed at first, found it boring and confusing, but gave it to the first 100 pages before setting it aside. I hit the 100 page mark, and it took off running.....fast! I have barely noticed the next 100 pages fly by. I am now looking forward to ole Harry Hole. Alas, I hope I live long enough to get through my for later list on this site! Happy reading everyone, give this one a try....you'll probably like it!.......Nov 20, just finished it.....I got a little confused again at the end, I think I am just not used to this writing style. I am going to give Phantom a try, let's see if I have any trouble with that!
A slow start, I had trouble immersing myself as I do with Nesbo's Harry Hole series, but the tension slowly starts to build midway through the book, and becomes gripping by the finish.
This is an adult thriller with lots of twists and turns. It not only delves into the psyche of the main character but has some wonderful plot twists that I didn't see coming in the end. a good read for someone who likes a bit of blood in the story.
Enjoyed this story - headhunter is definitely an unexplored occupation in novels. All sorts of twists that keep the story interesting and moving along, but many hints dropped along the way for the perceptive reader.
This is one of the best novels I've read in ages! Suspense, intrigue, deception, murder, double-crosses, everything written as only Jo Nesbo can. A page turner!
We just watched the movie also - glued to the TV! Followed the book very well and was also very entertaining. Don't miss it. It is sometimes listed in its Dutch (?) title with "headhunters" as a subtitle.
a real page-turner. exciting.
