Bruno's day has not started well: an international summit to be held in a local chateau is being threatened by Basque separatists, and animal-rights campaigners have declared a war on the beloved local delicacy, foie gras, in the form of an attack on a local duck farm. Horst Vogelstern, a famed researcher working in the archaeological treasure house that is the Vézère Valley, has made a find that promises to change our understanding of humankind's evolution, but complications ensue when another body is unearthed at the site--one that sports a gunshot wound to the head and is definitely not ancient. Bruno senses a link between the activist groups and the unidentified body, but his investigation is hindered by further attacks on local farms and the interference of local bureaucrats. When Horst disappears under mysterious circumstances, the scope of the case widens, and tension in the town of St-Denis reaches an all-time high.

The Crowded Grave is a sense-stirring portrait of the culture, camaraderie and culinary customs of French country life, accompanied by a satisfying and intoxicating mystery.

Ever (enjoyably) local flavour includes topical bureaucratically overbearing E.U. and French regulations that in the U.S would be obtrusive. Interesring, tourists, as opposes to thriller readers, would never see this. Series is still on a roll.

The fourth book in the Bruno, Chief of Police Investigation series

This series is always delightful, with its wonderful scenery, food, and wine. This entry has a darker tone, regarding France's relationship to Spain concerning Basque terrorists. Several different plot-lines provide lots of misdirection. I did have a flash as to the identity of the villain, but only shortly before the reveal. Series lovers take note, sorrow awaits in the action-packed conclusion.

Spoiler Alert!
This is a good series and I have enjoyed it but not this book. I had figured out who the double agent was and they killed the dog.

This book has some very bad news at the end. Steel yourself.

I couldn't agree more with the comment from ErnestBasset. The loss of a pivotal beloved character at the end of the book is gratuitious sentiment manipulation. It left me feeling I don't care about reading another Bruno novel. it's too bad because up till now I had enjoyed these books.

Bruno can ride a horse! He's like a combination of Hamish Macbeth and Chief Inspector Gamache. He polices the French countryside and eats very, very well.

Don't read this book!

I am beyond sad to have to say that. I first encountered Walker's work by chance while on a vacation and have greatly enjoyed his subsequent books. This one has the usual mystery based upon French history, the love of the foods of St Denis, and a cast of intriguing characters and relationships.

That said, the story, any past enjoyment of his work, and any desire I have to read his work again, is destroyed by the totally unnecessary death of a central character at the end of the book. The ending in no way contributes to the story, and simply feels like a manipulation of the reader's feelings for no decent reason.
