In the year 44 B.C., Julius Caesar has been assassinated and civil war threatens to destroy the Republic. In the void left by Caesar's demise, egos clash and numerous players jockey for position. The brutally ambitious Mark Antony attempts to solidify his power, aligning himself with Atia, but coming to blows with her cunning son Octavian, who has been anointed in Caesar's will as his only son and heir. The conspirator Brutus ponders how to curry favor with the masses that have condemned him as a murderer, while his mother Servilia concocts a deadly plot of her own. Meanwhile, Titus Pullo attempts to pull his friend Lucius Vorenus out of the darkness that has engulfed his soul in the wake of personal tragedy. For once again, the fates of these two mismatched soldiers seem inexorably tied to the fate of Rome itself.

Good stuff but Spartacus original is much better television. Season one is great because of the actor who plays Julius Caesar

'''An Excellent precursor--to the later --sex filled ''Spartacus series''..!

The best and most nearly accurate depiction of the flavor and nature of these times.
And the most entertaining story-telling, and with only a little 'tweeking' of history for plot improvement.

(For instance: ... Octavian was away at school in Greece when Caesar was offed,..and not in Rome at the time, as in the series.
And Roman spears were used for throwing,.. but never for jabbing. They were designed to break on impact, so that they couldn't be thrown back at you.)

But this is still a FEAST of a series,... and I only wish there were more of it !

Great historical series about what it was like to live in the Roman Empire. The characters are quite interesting and well-developed. The amount of detail that went into the set, the clothes, and the overall design of the show is amazing. The only thing I would warn people about is that there is a lot of sex scenes, so I would be careful about watching this show around children.

I love this series, especially for its depiction of characters from different strata of Roman life, from the ruling class and merchants, military and religious, male, female, child, slave, criminal etc.
But it is exceedingly bloody, violent, coarse. Season two veers further in that direction, in fact, and lacks some of the sophistication of season 1.
The set I was provided also lacked discs 4 & 5. Yes, according to what's sold at B&N and Amazon, there are 5 discs, but I saw only 1,2 and 3. Sounds like others got the same. No wonder it seemed to end abruptly, with story lines unfinished. Will put my name on the list again to see if I can pick up the other two in one of the remaining copies. Personally, I think it would be preferable for NYPL to split a 5-6 disc set into two rentals anyway, so they wouldn't be tied up so long. It's not easy to find 10-12 hours to watch movies in a week!
