Mavis Gary is not likable--in fact, she can be considered a terrible person. After getting an email from an ex-boyfriend, she decides that he is unhappy, "a hostage" in his suburban life with his newborn infant and wife, and she decides to revisit her hometown to win him back. This movie is often uncomfortable with too many cringe-worthy moments to count. It's also a painfully realistic depiction of depression and alcoholism, and isn't quite the comedy that it was originally marketed as. This is for those who like dark humor and intense character studies.

This is the ultimate feel bad movie. You will hate Charlize Theron's character. You will feel ridiculously uncomfortable for long stretches of this movie. You will want to cover your eyes during some key scenes toward the end. That said, this movie is totally enrapturing. For as horrible of a human as Mavis is, she is deeply flawed, very relatable (at least for me, which is probably a commentary on my own instability but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) and totally interesting character. Is this a date movie or a family movie? Absolutely not. You should still watch this, but prepare for a bumpy ride.

Terrible movie. Nothing redeemable about it. Kept trying to give it a chance... But it remained consistently a waste of time in the end.

This actually turned out to be a fairly depressing movie. Not that it wasn't good, but it wasn't the movie I expected. Worth watching though.

This film is an interesting take on arrested development. It's not completely unheard of for a villain to be a hero (for example, Gone with the Wind and The Social Network show horrible characters in the spotlight), but for the most part, these anti-heroes have some redeeming qualities. In the case of Young Adult, Mavis is a protagonist that you hate. She's sad, she's pathetic, she's horrible. But who wants to feel for her? It's a miracle really that such a seedy character carries the film so well. Showing that you can go home again, but some people just never change, this film is an interesting and far more adult take on the kind of stories Diablo Cody usually creates. Fans of films like Juno may be disappointed as this film lacks that sugar-sweet heart-of-gold sensibility, and the sense of humour tastes as bitter as the alcohol the protagonist swills. But for a reality check for those who feel envy and then spite for those spoiled with everything for what seems like eternity (whether it be a high school mean girl or just a horrible acquaintance in adulthood), this film gives us catharsis in a overly large, hard-to-swallow gulps.

Dark humor and a bit sad story. There are many movies about men who doesn't want to grow up this one is about woman. How far you can go to reach your fantasy? Can you change past?

DREADFUL!!

I thought this movie would be a story of growing up and or coming of age.

This story is not about a simple immaturity. The character Mavis is seriously disturbed! Needs a major pscycological intervention.

I wouldnt suggest it at all.

SERIOUS WASTE OF TIME!
