Entertaining thriller about demonic possession and exorcism. Not exploitative or grotesque in its presentation. Three character storyline in the third act. Sir Anthony Hopkins is very effective and disturbingly so in the final act. Once again, how much is History and how much is Hollywood in this recreation of true events.

You need a low threshold of persuasion to take the two-dimensional Hopkins seriously in most of his roles, though he did make a good Hitler years ago, capturing the dictator's metallic personality. This tedious film requires acceptance of demon-possession to work at all; otherwise avoid it.

Once again, another incredible performance by Hopkins-- he's almost as creepy in this as in The Silence of The Lambs.

It was nice to see O'Donoghue in a role other than the dashing Captain Hook from Once Upon a Time (which is a great show!)

This movie will keep you guessing until the end whether or not Father Lucas (Hopkins) set the whole thing up or if Michael (O'Donoghue) is crazy/ correct about the "possessions" being psychological issues or if the devil truly does exist.

Based on true events but now everything seems to be. It was very slow and melodramatic. The young actor co-starring Anthony Hopkins seemed like he was always bored and annoyed at Hopkins and did not really act. I'd say this was more drama than horror with some disturbing images but quite a boring 'possession' movie.

The Rite is a movie based on the true story of a young seminary student who is sent to the Vatican to study exorcism. In Rome the student becomes an apprentice to Father Lucas who has performed hundreds of exorcisms. Once skeptical and losing his faith the student experiences strange and scary events that renew his faith. Other than the exorcism scenes the movie is rather slow and mundane.

An average religious horror/thriller. Not terrible, but not outstanding either

It is with only the greatest amount of irony that I say "Dear god, if you can avoid this one, do avoid this one." And I mean it. Oh, yes, it has higher production values than the average indie film. And it's got able actors going through their able paces, remembering where to stand, when to move, and what to say when they get to their spot. But this, this piece of tripe should be regarded as nothing so much as seriously bad propaganda. And dishonest about it, too. All with the veneer that is provided by nods to Rationality and Progress. This is just Two Cheers for the Auto-da-fe, if you ask me. Yeah, it's got Mr. Hopkins. And he's collecting a likely substantial paycheck for being in this one. Ciaran Hinds, too. (Less of a paycheck, but then his role was likely done in a day. Two at most.) Long been a tradition of that. Just watch DeMille's ouevre if you need a remind. The moral of this exercise in sloppy thinking and delusional self-gratification: don't drink the Kool-Aid. Or rather the communion wine raised in toast to Theological Onanism.
