Commissaire Adamsberg leaves Paris for a three-day conference in London. Accompanying him are Estalere, a young sergeant, and Commandant Danglard, who is terrified at the idea of travelling beneath the Channel. It is a welcome change of scenery, until a macabre and brutal case comes to the attention of their colleague Radstock from New Scotland Yard.

Just outside the gates of the baroque Highgate Cemetery a pile of shoes is found. Not so strange in itself, but the shoes contain severed feet. As Scotland Yard's investigation begins, Adamsberg and his colleagues return home and are confronted with a massacre in a suburban home. Adamsberg and Danglard are drawn in to a trail of vampires and vampire-hunters that leads them all the way to Serbia, a place where the old certainties no longer apply.

In Fred Vargas's riveting new novel, Commissaire Adamsberg finds himself in the line of fire as never before.

The seventh book in the Commissaire Adamsberg series

Too much superstition and irrelevant detail, although it does build on future books to give us some background on the characters. Those severed feet images were a bit too disgusting for my taste.

I really like this series by Fred Vargas, but this book was not my favorite. It was a bit too fanciful/unbelievable for my taste (and I am usually ready to go along with most unbelievable things). The overall series is so good that even a less enjoyable book is a 4-star read.

First time reading this author. Slow starting but ended well. I will read her previous books

OTT--vampires historically contribute to the plot line

I love this series! The characters are very strange, yet believable. The working out of the plot is logical and fantastical at the same time.

This is the latest in the series featuring Commissaire Adamsberg. The story begins as Adamsberg leaves for a conference in London. His neighbour Lucio insists he helps a cat in distress before he goes. In London, Commandant Danglard is in his element as an anglophile. During a walk with a local DCI, they find themselves witness to a unique crime scene. Several pairs of shoes outside a cemetary, with feet still in them. This is disquieting, but not their case.
On return to Paris, Adamsberg's team is called in to investigate a gruesome murder. Tales of vampires, connections to the London shoes, and a traitor within the team are all part of this story. Adamsberg is not your usual detective and there are those who feel threatened by his methods. As he finds links to other similar cases, and a small mountain town in Serbia, he must also face someone from his own past who threatens him. A great story, as usual.

"An Uncertain Place is absolutely, unequivocally the best Commissaire Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg book yet. Witty, smart, full of the style that has made Fred Vargas one of the top dozen crime writers now working, this novel has it all."
