William Hurt plays a doctor who unintentionally lacks compassion for his patients. One day he is struck with a serious disease and learns about the cruel, cold, uncaring world of the patient. Very fine acting and directing that shows the loneliness, isolation, and fear of the patient as he withdraws into his own world, afraid of every bit of bad news that may come his way. In five years, the screenwriter, Anthony Minghella, would get the Oscar win for director and the screenwriting Oscar nom for great film, "The English Patient."
