Mary Stuart was named Queen of Scotland when she was only six days old. Mary would be the last Roman Catholic ruler of Scotland. She is imprisoned at the age of 23 by her cousin Elizabeth, the Queen of England and her arch adversary. Nineteen years later the life of Mary would end with her beheading. With her execution the last threat to Elizabeth's throne is finally removed. The two Queens with their contrasting personalities make a dramatic counterpoint to history.

This is a 1971 British biographical drama directed by Charles Jarrott.
Although it is based on the historical events, the film takes considerable liberties to achieve increased dramatic effect, in particular two fictitious face-to-face encounters between the two Queens.
In real life, both queens never met.
It also depicts Mary as enjoying a late-morning cup of hot chocolate in bed.
She even requests it when she is a prisoner, but in reality hot chocolate was not a popular drink in the British Isles until well into the 18th century.
In any case, it is a fascinating and dramatic account of the two Queens.
