This is a lovely holiday classic from 1962, the first animated holiday special produced specifically for television. It features the Mr. Magoo cartoon character (voiced by Jim Backus, best known as Thurston Howell III on "Gilligan's Island"), cleverly presenting him as an actor playing Ebeneezer Scrooge in a Broadway musical production of "A Christmas Carol." (The Gerald McBoing-Boing cartoon kid appears as Tiny Tim.) The story is divided into acts like an actual play; we even see an opening and closing stage curtain.

There are wonderful original songs written and composed by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill (the legendary team that immediately after went on to give the world "Funny Girl," making a star of Barbra Streisand), and they move the production along very effectively. It begins with Backus as Magoo singing "It's Great To Be Back on Broadway." As the curtain opens and the play begins, the songs include "Ringle, Ringle" Scrooge's gleeful paean to the joys of cold hard cash; "Winter Was Warm," the sad ballad sung by Belle as she realizes she has lost the man she loves to greed; "Alone in the World," the heart-piercing duet sung in the Christmas Past sequence by Ebeneezer and the lonely boarding school child he once was; the hilariously mean-spirited "We're Despicable (The Plunderer's March)" sung by a cackling undertaker, laundress and charwoman looking to profit from Scrooge's death; and "The Lord's Bright Blessing," sung by Bob Cratchit and his family (and later reprised at the end of the "play").

In addition to the distinctive vocal talent of Jim Backus, "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol" features the voices of actors Morey Amsterdam (Buddy Sorel on "The Dick Van Dyke Show"), Jane Kean as Belle (Trixie Norton on Jackie Gleason's hour-long "Color Honeymooners" television show), Jack Cassidy (usually cast as a vainglorious egotist but very touching as the put-upon Cratchit), and the great Paul Frees, once known as the man of a thousand voices.

There are far better versions of The Christmas Carol that are geared towards children, such as "All Dogs Christmas Carol".
