Author of The Third Angel

Alice Hoffman's previous novel, The Third Angel , was hailed as "an unforgettable portrait of the depth of true love" ( USA Today ), "stunning" (Jodi Picoult), and "spellbinding" ( Miami Herald ). Her new novel, The Story Sisters , charts the lives of three sisters-Elv, Claire, and Meg. Each has a fate she must meet alone: one on a country road, one in the streets of Paris, and one in the corridors of her own imagination. Inhabiting their world are a charismatic man who cannot tell the truth, a neighbor who is not who he appears to be, a clumsy boy in Paris who falls in love and stays there, a detective who finds his heart's desire, and a demon who will not let go.

What does a mother do when one of her children goes astray? How does she save one daughter without sacrificing the others? How deep can love go, and how far can it take you? These are the questions this luminous novel asks.

At once a coming-of-age tale, a family saga, and a love story of erotic longing, The Story Sisters sifts through the miraculous and the mundane as the girls become women and their choices haunt them, change them and, finally, redeem them. It confirms Alice Hoffman's reputation as "a writer whose keen ear for the measure struck by the beat of the human heart is unparalleled" ( The Chicago Tribune ).

Very depressing. I want to blame the mother but it is certainly not all her fault. Sad, realistic story of a dysfunctional family likely underpinned by some genetic mental health issues exacerbated by real life child sexual molestation. A great read overall.

A great read. It showed the ups and downs of the relationship between the 3 sisters and at the same time focused on their individual successes and failures. The many tragedies the 3 sisters faced though devastating and harsh, it gave them unique identities.

too much death.

I find Alice Hoffman a fascinating writer. Although huge life altering things happen in this book, we get to view them through the reactions of and consequences to the characters, not dwelling on the events themselves. I will be thinking on this book for a while. Highly recommend.

Great story filled with human emotion and family drama. If you like Hoffman, you can't fail to like this one. I couldn't put it down.

A perfect story to cozy up with on a cold winter night. This is my first Alice Hoffman book, and based on this wonderful tale, I would try any book by her. A story of love, loyality and tragedy. Three sisters grow up together with a secret language and secrets they keep from one anouther. It will ruin them and save them both. The supporting characters are also very endearing and interesting. Read it!

This may be the most painfully beautiful novel I've ever read. It tells of the worst things that can happen to a family -- and what happens to the family in the years following tragedy. This novel made me an Alice Hoffman fan for life.

Probably one of Hoffman's more depressing novels. Gripping to the very end.

Lyrical and heartbreaking, Hoffman's newest novel is un-put-downable and beautifully written. If you like Hoffman's writing style, you'll like this one. I loved it!
