Love this series !! Been watching it on pbs since grade school ~ 420
"The sanctuary sparrow" sure makes living in medieval times look HORRIBLE. As for Brother Cadfael pulling modern day CSI I have a hard time believing it. The behaviors of just about everyone are astounding. If you have position then you have everything. If you are subservient then pray for the day you pass on.
I’ve found that there are two types of these “Masterpiece Mystery” series from the UK. One, in the Agatha Christie mode, is simply a puzzler; a way to keep boredom in check, rather like doing Sudoku. (“Midsomer Murders” comes to mind). The other mode illuminates the issues of a particular period, using a crime to explore those times; in this camp belong series like “Prime Suspect”, “Foyle’s War”, and “Inspector George Gently”. I much prefer the latter, and so I rented “Cadfael” for the first time, hoping both for entertainment and illumination. Sad to say, “Cadfael” falls squarely into the first type, a pleasant-enough time waster that uses the period as a colorful background to a rather pedestrian, uninvolving puzzle, with stick figure characters and lackluster dialogue. Pity that Derek Jacobi, one of the Patron Saints of Good British Telly (“I Claudius”, anyone?) lent his prestige to this mediocrity.
