Modest Mouse certainly aren't the first artists to give an abbrasive veneer to beautiful music. Captain Beefheart, Pere Ubu and Tom Waits come to mind as forebearers of their style. This album is sometimes dismissed as non representative because of its popular single (Float On) and it's note perfect lead-ins (Horn Intro, The World at Large) but there are still plenty of rough edges throughout the album that bring the the more obviously harmonious moments into contrast. The overall result is one of the most thoroughly satisfying listening experiences of the surrounding decade.
