This is a 2003 American drama directed by Vadim Perelman, based on the novel of the same name by Andre Dubus III.
No director could make a good film out of a bad script.
Apparently the plot comes from the novel, which is a bad story in the first place.
There's nothing wrong in funneling operatic tragedy through seemingly mundane domestic battles, but the way events escalate here feels deeply fraudulent and meaninglessly downbeat.
It turns out unintentionally comic rather than genuinely tragic.

A tale of three loose cannons whose lives intersect in ways only Hollywood can dream up.

The self-pitying, entitled, rude, whiny Kathy could have stopped the whole mess before it even began if she wasn't such an immature, self absorbed little twit, the chauvanistic, accustomed-to-power, arrogant Behrani who is, unfortunately, given to dramatic and grotesque statements, and Lester, an oddly undeveloped character who appears to be a fully sane, mature man of law-and-order one minute and an unbelievable nutcase the next.

The two leading characters in this story could have tried going through ordinary legal avenues to obtain adequate recompense for all their loss and damage from the county (the only real wrongdoer in the story - although Kathy's original inaction was ridiculous and her later spur to inappropriate action was equally ridiculous), they even qualified financially for free legal aid, but no, they have to tear each other apart instead.

And of course, innocent bystanders are caught in the fallout.

In the end I cared not one iota what happened to the very foolish Kathy or the equally foolish Lester, and I was appalled by Behrani.

But I was left wondering what would happen to the completely uninvolved and largely unmentioned remaining daughter of Behrani, who was doomed to perhaps suffer the most of all going forward, in her rigid appearance- and class-centric society....

Very intense. Loved the concept; neither have done anything wrong yet they find themselves in a legal battle. The ending was truly sad.

Jennifer Connelly and Ben Kingsley give stellar performances in the powerful, intense, and tragic movie.

My heart goes out to both characters... Kathy in her struggle to keep the home she grew up in and Behrani trying desperately for dignity as he supports his family and attempts to make a better life in America.

Very few movies earn 5 stars, certainly not this one. I would say read the novel by Andre Dubus III first, but then you'll probably be disappointed in the film. The book is a domestic drama that plays out like a taut, intense thriller with an almost Greek sense of doom and tragedy. Ben Kingsley (has any contemporary actor played a greater variety of races?) is an Iranian ex-Colonel working hard to buy a house for his wife and child. He gets one for cheap at auction; a house that was repossessed from Jennifer Connelly's struggling, damaged character. Their lives then become dangerously intertwined as she tries to get her house back, with the help of a married cop (a dude who was on "Justified"), and Kingsley, proud and stubborn, refuses to budge. Tastefully, if drably, directed and well-acted, especially by Kingsley and Shohreh Aghdashloo, as his wife, it lacks the power of the book and ends up being more grim and depressing (like "Mystic River," "21 Grams," "In the Bedroom") than tragic. Also, could've used more sand.

This is a so-so film that would have benefited greatly from better characterization. The script seems weak when motivations of characters are so cloudy, especially a key character, Lester the cop. Some deft acting, especially by Ben Kingsley.
