The illustrated history of the 20th century's most compelling invention.

Powered flight freed humanity from earthly constraints and revolutionized the world in countless ways -- technologically, militarily, sociologically, economically and politically.

Aviation Century The Early Years covers the period from 1900 to 1939, exploring the eternal fascination with flight, the events surrounding the Wright brothers' and other flying pioneers' adventurous first flights, the dramatic development of military aviation brought about by the First World War, and the rise of commercial aviation. This volume of the Aviation Century series also looks at the great individuals who created the world's aviation industries, including Santos-Dumont, Farman, Bleriot, Caproni, Curtiss, and AV Roe.

Top aviation photographer Dan Patterson's photographs of preserved and restored aircraft in museum and private collections combine with rare archival photographs to make this the best book on early aviation available anywhere.

I thought technology was evolving quickly now, but the explosion of development in aircraft technology after the Wrights flight is amazing!

If early planes are your weakness, especially those early ones that could barely fly, the ones held together by spit and a prayer and baling wire, then this may well be a book you’ll enjoy. And its not just about the planes either. It’s also about those men (and they were men for the most part) that flew them. There was that first proving ground that first fiery cauldron of World War One that so severely tested the men and the machines. Both of them were virtually expendable during this war that chewed up men as well as their machines.
The early years is about biplanes and triplanes; Sopwiths, Fokkers and canards; aces Ball, Lufbery and Bishop; its about reconstructed Bleriots,, museums at Le Bourget, and the Cinncinnati airport. It’s about the designers and builders: William Boeing, Oleg Antonov and Ernst Heinkel.
The pictures are first rate --- too bad they aren’t all in colour.
