With all the narrative power and emotional immediacy that have made her novels acclaimed international bestsellers, Anita Shreve unfolds a richly engaging tale of marriage, money, and troubled times-the story of a pair of young newlyweds who, setting out to build a life together in a derelict beach house on the Atlantic coast, soon discover how threatening the world outside their front door can be.

When Honora decides to marry the dashing salesman Sexton, she finds out very quickly exactly the kind of person her husband really is. Sexton selfishly conjures disaster with a couple of shady deals that lead to ruin thanks in part to the Stock Market crash of 1929. Joining in their fate are the voices of 4 other characters. Although diverse every voice must come together to bring the story to a conclusion. Anita Shreve has re-created a portion of our not too distant past and placed a well defined magniying glass on the union unrest in the early part of the 20th century.
