I've seen this play performed once, performed in this play twice, and read it more times than I can count. Both reading the play and seeing it performed have been wonderful experiences. I strongly recommend this play to anyone who wants to learn more about women, sexual assault, or respecting others. The monologues range from heart-breaking, to laugh out loud, to just plain informative. I've learned a lot about myself and other women from being exposed to this play. Eve Ensler did the world a service when she wrote this piece.

I thought I would be more moved by this book than I was. This book is said to have moved many women to the verge of epiphany, and I did not have that experience. Maybe because I was always taught to respect my body and others, as well as the concept of feminism from an early age. I also found the end of the V-day edtion with information on V-day to be a little dated, most of the information was from 1999-2001. It left me with more questions than answers, wondering if V-day is still as popular. It was an okay book but not amazing...

Random House (the book publisher) proclaims VM to be "the bible for a new generation of women." Feminist Gloria Steinem considers the book to be "poetry for the theater." Nevertheless the movie (as well as the book) includes a sexual abuse episode between a 24 year-old woman and a 16 year-old girl (in the book it was originally 13), and because this is described as "consensual" and has been glorified as artistic expression... Yet, in real life this adult woman would be subject to criminal charges!

“The Vagina Monologues” is available from this library on DVD and as an audiobook read by the author Eve Ensler. The play script is available online in PDF format from several sources which a Yahoo search lists. Read, watch, or listen to this play and judge for yourself. Don’t let others do your thinking for you!

Heaven forbid that women should think or talk about their own vaginas! This play explores the full spectrum of vaginal experiences--menarche, female genital cutting, masturbation, rape, love making, and childbirth are just a few topics. You have to see a live rendition to truly appreciate it.

In the play The Vagina Monologues, the word vagina is pronounced 136 times. It is described as “a play about violence against women.” Among other stories, it romanticizes the sexual encounter where an older woman gets a female minor drunk. One monologue reads that "Christians don't have vaginas." The few males mentioned are depicted in a very negative light. Hillary Clinton, Gloria Steinmen (wrote a Foreword of the book) and Suzan Sarandon (performed in the play) are big fans of Eve Ensler. In most of our Universities now Valentine’s Day has been substituted by V-Day–guess what that V stands for? Yes, judge for yourself, don't let others do your thinking for you: read it and see the kind of trash young women are reading! NOTICE: Attempts to censor (“Report this”) my comments will be fiercely fought under the aegis of American Libraries’ beloved principles: Freedom of Speech, Freedom to Read, Intellectual Freedom.

"[...] it dawned on me that nothing was more important than stopping violence toward women--that the desecration of women indicated the failure of human beings to honor and protect life and that this failing would, if we did not correct it, be the end of us all. [...] When you rape, beat, maim, mutilate, burn, bury, and terrorize women, you destroy the essential life energy on the planet. You force what is meant to be open, trusting, nurturing, creative, and alive to be bent, infertile, and broken."

EuSei Mar 28, 2013

Sometimes I used force, but not violent, oppressing force, no. More like dominating, ‘I’m gonna take you someplace, why don’t you lay back, enjoy the ride’ kind of force. (On how a woman sexually seduces other women.)

The beginning of this book is the actual Vagina Monologues. With the introduction peices in italic and then the monologues in normal print. The stories are quite short and are on a variety of topics, from rape, to abuse, to consent etc. Following the monologues there is a section on V-day which is a movement to preform the monologues on Valentines day in order to raise funds and awareness for voilence against women. There is an information section and a letters section.
