Set in 1939 Poland, Antonina Zabinski and her husband, Dr. Jan Zabinski own the Warsaw zoo which does incredibly well under their care. Once the Nazis invaded, the two were forced to leave their zoo and report to the newly appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck. It is there that they join the Resistance aimed towards defeating the Nazi party and saving hundreds of lives in what was now known as the Warsaw Ghetto. This historic drama film chronicles the story of what was once a reality for many people while also adding a fantasy twist. Any lover of history or drama will be able to appreciate this cinematic masterpiece.

Suffered thru this movie my bf wanted me to watch. Such a waste of my time!
This was an American/UK movie not even shot in Poland, but entirely in the Czech republic, with Czech cast and Czech production, yep 99% Czech movie! But glad the Czech republic is not signed bellow it.
Cos I was bored to death! What an incredibly melodramatic movie only Americans can make. Sad, that Poland did not take on the production like planned (would have been much more realistic), but US (of course) got it.
If you are looking for a historical facts movie, this one is not. A cookie cutter movie.
Also not keen on human kissing animals and sleeping with non domestic animals (tigers) in bed. Wild animals should remain free not become someone's pets!
Btw is Chastain's high pitch voice the same in her real life like in this movie? Too annoying!
Skip this one.

I enjoyed that there were a few stories in a story because so much happened. Be prepared for a tearjerker if sensitive. It affects me more when based on a true story.

Excellent movie perfectly crafted to convey the horror, cruelty and vileness of this evil war to the general public; this is not a documentary and does not pretend to be one. It is respectful, tactful and if it takes “creating a massive fiction “ to send a righteous message to the most people then it can only be applauded and not criticized.

I have always felt that the book is better than the movie. This is one time when I think the movie is better than the book.

Very good acting. Found it somewhat swayed from the original, the book. Some chapters they left out or changed.
Heartbreaking with animals killed innocently because of war but history made with this family saving many jews from death by hiding them.
Prefer the book but otherwise movie excellent.

world doesn't need another SCHINDLER'S LIST, does it? where are the films about saving Russians during Stalin's purge? Or, saving Chinese, during Mao's activities? or chronicling the bravery of ms. rachel corrie, more recently?

WWII. Nazi evil. People resist. So, these people speak English in their own home--but with not very good, thick German accents? The bad guys actually speak German, so we get subtitles.

A very good movie. However, like many of this "based on a true story" movies, this movie is literally that. Beyond the zoo, hiding Jews, and the zookeeper's family's names, the movie is heavily fictionalized. Personally, I don't mind taking minor liberties to make a movie's plot tighter and kinetic but when you create massive fictions to tell what is otherwise a compelling and real story, you lose a lot of my respect. Go in with your eyes open and maybe read the book instead or as well. Even then...

This movie was very good. Jessica Chastain was excellent. It is heartbreaking that this is based on a true story.
