This is a deep book with excellent character development. Conroy does a great job of creating the mental images. Frank Muller's audio version is among the best audio books I've ever heard.

Conroy's writing is undoubtedly beautiful. His nature writing is superb - an added bonus I did not expect with this book. I found this book dull at points, but was motivated to continue by Conroy's mastery of craft.
Bleak, dark, poetic story of twins Tom and Savannah, and their very different reactions to growing up in an extremely dysfunctional South Carolina family.

Three decades after its initial publication, this remains one of the quintessential Southern novels. You'll laugh, cry, think ... and in some cases, hurl - and have a marvelous time doing all four reading this book.
