The first season was a smorgasbord of history, social situations, life, humour and stories of midwifery. I fell head-over-heels in love with this brilliant characters, so much so that I took out Season 2. Nancy

The season that got me hooked, I liked the story of brave young women using their skills to help other strong women becoming mothers...I was drawn in by the drama of each birth story.

What a fabulous series. The stories are touching, intelligent, real and so intimate. Depicting one of the many intensely moving moments in one’s life ( welcoming a new life into the world), it knits a character-driven story around the…

Great show! I wasn't sure I would be able to connect to a show about birthing babies, but the content of the show is more than that. You learn about the midwifery profession and the interesting characters along the way. Bravo!

A candid, warm, moving, and funny glimpse into the lives of midwives and families in East London in the during the 1950s. You will fall in love with every single character. The show is based on and inspired by the bestselling memoirs…

The whole series has both entertained and educated me (mostly about public health care and history in England around the time of WW II). Well developed characters you come to care about and look forward to hearing more about. I'm so glad…

I'm incredibly impressed by this series. Speaking as someone who is not a "baby person", the show goes much deeper into the human experience of families, love, grief, and hardships, all under the blanket of post-WWII England. The…

A good series. About more than having babies. Interesting to see how the characters and relationships develop as the series progresses.

If you were like me you thought this would be boring because it's about babies and repetitive episodes of child birth. But this series is based off a real midwife's experiences. Very intriguing. Especially if you read further into 20th…

Great series, really makes you think about all the hardships at the time. Jennifer Worth's memoirs are touching. Followed her book to a tee.

I used to think Foyle's War was the best series on DVD, but this has the edge now, though Foyle is still near the top. Give it a try, you will need intense counselling if you want to stop watching it - and there are four seasons! …

This is a great series. A historical drama with a witty British sense of humor. Strong acting. The revolving patient scenarios involve lots of pushing, screaming and funny looking bellies but they were midwives. Starting in the 1950s, it…

I can only reiterate the sentiments of several others directly before me: Chummy is quite an endearing character; I too was overwhelmed by the constant barrage of screaming pregnant women (but the title is not a misnomer, so, I guess --…

I love the ambience created in this series set in 1950's England. I especially enjoyed the character of Chummy, the self-deprecating upper-class nurse/midwife at work in London's East End.

After seeing a list based on "if you like Downton Abbey, try this" - I just finished Season 1 of Calling the Midwife. It is another excellent produced show & cast. Yes, as you might expect from the title there's a lot of babies being born,…

No guns(this is England) no aliens, no f-bombs, just a story about young middle/upper class women helping the poor in 1957 London, along with the nuns they serve with.

This is an okay series-not on a par with "Downton Abbey", but fairly well done and interesting. I could do with fewer birth scenes-that's getting old. However, the story does develop the characters more toward the end of this season and so…

A well written and superbly acted series that takes you back to the late '50s. Vanessa Redgrave does the voice over which adds a dimension that only she can. There is also a companion to season one and two available @ EPL: ' The Life…
