The album is a unique snapshot of the music's finest, from Buddy Spicher and Jesse McReynolds to David Grisman and Stuart Duncan, on to Bryan Sutton and Tony Trischka with special guest vocals from Tim O'Brien. Barnett curated the set and in many cases arranged the compositions, putting himself in harm's way as it were, a short interval away from the titans of the form, settling into composed instrumental breaks or trading off on improvisation, an exercise he says was intended to "put me up against my heroes as a challenge, to push me to always achieve my best."The album is a unique snapshot of the music's finest, from Buddy Spicher and Jesse McReynolds to David Grisman and Stuart Duncan, on to Bryan Sutton and Tony Trischka with special guest vocals from Tim O'Brien. The Seasons…Dreams concept of the album is not original, but the material with which Meyers fills it indeed is so. At the center of the program is the Beethoven Violin Sonata No. 3, Op. 24, "Spring," given a restrained performance inflected toward the evanescent, fantasy-like tone of the rest of the album. The other pieces push the seasons-and-dreams theme into unusual territory. Clair de lune is certainly a common enough item on such programs, but Wagner's Träume is less so, as is the shift from harp to piano accompaniment that follows with the Beethoven (the harp returns later). The pieces that follow the sonata are again just slightly left of center, with an unusual set of variations on a Japanese song, "Sakura," mixed in with Gershwin and Broadway tunes. Then comes an extremely odd nightmare turn to the dream mood: Alfred Schnittke's setting of Stille Nacht (Silent Night). With Debussy's Beau Soir and Après un Rêve of Fauré , the listener is back on familiar ground. The Seasons…Dreams concept of the album is not original, but the material with which Meyers fills it indeed is so. A wild child and a rebel at heart, this legendary Argentinean musician has often been surrounded by an aura of mystery during her long career. The "evening talks", a film by Georges Gachot, a French film maker specialized in classical music documentaries, lifts a corner of the veil: Martha Argerich shares with us her memories, confides in us her doubts, and transmits to us her incredible appetite for music-making. Martha Argerich has before admitted to feeling "lonely" on stage during solo performances and now focuses on concertos and duo work. The film also shows her performing with some of her closest musical friends such as pianists Nelson Freire and Friedrich Gulda and in various chamber music settings.A wild child and a rebel at heart, this legendary Argentinean musician has often been surrounded by an aura of mystery during her long career. Speed and reliability are two of the ultimate goals in motorcycle production. Often there is one but not the other. Vincent Motorcycles aimed for both. This performance marks the first full recording of John Rutter's Psalmfest, a 50-minute work assembled from a group of shorter pieces (with a few new ones) for a performance in Texas in 1993. It consists of smaller pieces, juxtaposed in such a way that you get an idea of Rutter's variety of approaches. Sample the subtle, reverential orchestral introduction to I will lift up mine eyes (Psalm 121, track two), which goes beyond Rutter's sometimes bland positive outlook into French choral territory. The program is rounded out by a trio of newer pieces, including the delightful pageantry of This is the day, composed for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2011.This performance marks the first full recording of John Rutter's Psalmfest, a 50-minute work assembled from a group of shorter pieces (with a few new ones) for a performance in Texas in 1993.
